ASPAN's 2020 Leadership Development Institute was AWESOME!

ASPAN’s 2020 Leadership Development Institute (LDI) was held in virtual ZOOM format on November 7, 2020. Normally a much anticipated 3-day event full of education, encouragement, networking, and team building, this year’s conference had a very different feel. Attendees joked that one advantage to the new online format was sipping coffee (or any other beverage of choice! LOL) in comfy clothing while curled up on the couch. Despite the lack of face to face contact between attendees, the speakers were all visible online and their PowerPoint presentations were shared onscreen. Attendees (and facilitators) utilized the chat box option to comment and ask questions, allowing us to feel connected as an audience even though we were geographically spread across the country.

Several ASPAN presenters were familiar faces, while others newer on the scene. The agenda for the day included ASPAN organizational/business topics geared to assist state components in their own operations; and more relaxed self-care topics to assist individuals dealing with challenges and stressors during COVID-19. The following is a nutshell version of our day:

*President Elizabeth Card welcomed the group and outlined the procedure for the day. ASPAN’s education approver and tech guru Linda Wilson kept the program running smoothly all day and ironed out glitches as they occurred.

*Succession Planning: Empowering the Next Leaders: Immediate Past President Amy Dooley

*Instilling a Culture of Well-being: Region 4 Director Bronwyn Ship, Region 2 Director Susan Norris

*Financial Well-being: Past, Present, and Future: Treasurer Chris Skinner, Secretary Alphonzo Baker

*Effective Communication: Dealing with Challenges: Region 1 Director Connie Hardy Tabet, Region 3 Director Deborah Moengen

*Creating Innovative Evidence-based Virtual Education: Director for Education Mary Baird, Director for Clinical Practice Melissa Davidson

*Building and Leading Innovative Teams: Director for Research Peggy McNeil, Region 5 Director Keisha Franks

*Strategic Planning for Success: Vice President/President-Elect Jenny Kilgore

*Innovation, Resilience, and Leading through Change: President Elizabeth Card and guest

Attendees were awarded 7.25 contact hours for a day full of resources, education, and strategies to spark innovative thinking and well-being skills for components and individuals during these challenging times. Especially in a year when many are struggling to maintain CH requirements with so many cancellations and postponements, the LDI was a true gift from ASPAN to components since attendance was FREE for all ASPAN members. We hope many of our MESPAN nurses were able to attend and can utilize some of the resources and creative suggestions offered by our national leadership. Happy fall, everyone!
